Thrill Thy name – RCB-DC WPL Final 2024
“Ek over ki keemat, tum kya jano, “ DC women learned the hard way today the value of one over. The eighth over in DC Innings changed the tempo of the match and rotated the match on its head.
DC captain Meg Lanning
won the toss and decided to bat first in the high pressure WPL final. It was
almost like Deja-vu for Lanning who had won the toss in 2023 WPL final and had
elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians. DC had lost that final but Lanning
was more confident this year. DC had consistently done well and had topped the
table both in 2023 and 2024. But in the crunch final match in 2023, DC had put
up an unexciting score of 131/9 and Mumbai Indians had easily cruised to
victory by 7 wickets.
2024 – A new year, the
same old brilliant DC team. On their way to the final, they had lost just two
matches – one to Mumbai Indians and the other to UP Warriors. DC women had
comprehensively beaten RCB in their two league matches, once by 25 runs and the
second time by just one run.
17th March
2024 seemed to be a different story. Lanning decided to bat. The powerplay
overs were a breeze for DC. They cruised easily to 61/0 in the powerplay
displaying some great batting by Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning. No bowler from
RCB seemed to be able to stop them. Sophie Molineux had bowled the second over
and had been hit for a six by Shafali Verma and had ended up giving a total of
10 runs in the over. Then she came to bowl the eight over in which she took
three wickets – Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey. The
destruction started by Molineux was completed by Shreyanka Patil and Asha
Shobhna who picked up 4 and 2 wickets respectively
The tempo of the final
match changed in the favor of RCB at that time and DC was never able to reverse
it.
