IPL 2024 auction, December 19, 2023 at Coca Cola Arena, Dubai

The IPL 2024 auction was held on December 19, 2023, at Coca Cola Arena, Dubai. The auction was held outside India for the first time. The ten IPL teams (franchises) had a combined purse of INR 262.95 crore (USD 31.58 million approx.) available to spend at this auction. This was the highest combined purse available for any mini-auction till now. A total of 333 players (capped and uncapped) for 77 available slots (30 overseas) were ready to be filled up at this auction.

The mini-auction often tends to throw up wild dynamics because of limited supply and high demand. 

Top expensive buys

Mitchell Starc: The Australian fast bowler was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.).

Pat Cummins: The Australian fast bowler was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.).

Daryl Mitchell: The New Zealand allrounder was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for a whopping INR 14 crore.

Harshal Patel: The India fast bowler raked in INR 11.75 crore and was picked by Punjab Kings.

Alzarri Joseph: The Right-arm fast bowler from Antiguan(West Indies) was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 11.50 cr.

So, this time all teams have shown keen interest in fast bowlers. Other new shining names are  UP top order batter Sameer Rizvi was picked by CSK for INR 8.4 crore, Jharkhand's wicket-keeper batter Kumar Kushagra was snapped up for INR 7.2 crore by Delhi Capitals while Shahrukh Khan, an all-rounder for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, went to Gujarat Titans for INR 7.4 crore

The ODI World Cup performers were in the limelight with New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra, Australia batter Travis Head, South Africa allrounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka quick Dilshan Madushanka all landed lucrative IPL contracts.

Unexpected unsold players

With all the lucrative deals going around, the auction also threw some major surprises with certain major players going unsold. Top of the list were Steven Smith (Australia), Josh Inglis (Australia), Josh Hazlewood (Australia), Adil Rashid (England), Phil Salt (England), Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka), James Neesham (New Zealand) and Karun Nair (India). These names include those who were the favorites in previous editions of IPL.
