Multi-League Cricket Universe of T20

The popularity of T20 cricket has given rise to T20 leagues across the world. An interesting phenomenon that is seen in the new leagues is the ownership of these leagues. Several IPL teams have expanded their operations by purchasing franchises in other T20 leagues around the world. This trend has been growing in recent years as owners look to capitalize on the popularity of T20 cricket and establish their brands on a global scale.

 South Africa’s SA20 – Mini IPL

The emergence of SA20 in 2023 marked a significant moment, with all six franchises being snapped up by IPL owners. This created a fascinating "mirror image."

  • All six franchises in the new SA20 league are owned by IPL teams:
    • Chennai Super Kings - Joburg Super Kings
    • Mumbai Indians - MI Cape Town
    • Rajasthan Royals - Paarl Royals
    • Sunrisers Hyderabad - Sunrisers Eastern Cape
    • Delhi Capitals - Pretoria Capitals
    • Lucknow Super Giants - Durban Super Giants
United Arab Emirates

  • Three IPL teams own franchises in the upcoming International League T20 (ILT20):
    • Mumbai Indians - MI Emirates
    • Kolkata Knight Riders - Abu Dhabi Knight Riders
    • Delhi Capitals - Delhi Capitals (same name as their IPL team)

Caribbean Premier League (CPL)

  • Two IPL teams own franchises in the CPL:
    • Kolkata Knight Riders - Trinbago Knight Riders
    • Punjab Kings - Saint Lucia Kings

      Emerging Frontiers: USA and Beyond

Looking ahead, the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA presents a new frontier. Reliance Industries, owners of the Mumbai Indians, have secured a team showcasing their ambition to tap into the burgeoning American cricket market. This could be a game-changer, potentially accelerating cricket's growth in the region.

The BCCI's Dilemma: Opportunity or Oversaturation?

While expanding ownership brings undeniable benefits, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed concerns. Player burnout, potential clashes with national team commitments, and a decline in IPL quality due to talent dispersal are valid worries. Finding a balance between global expansion and protecting the core brand will be crucial for the BCCI and IPL's long-term sustainability.

In conclusion, the IPL's foray into other T20 leagues is a complex story with significant implications. While it presents exciting opportunities for growth, careful navigation is needed to ensure a win-win for all stakeholders and maintain the unique magic of the IPL.
