IPL 2024 Auction: Are the Franchises Overpaying for Australian Pacers?

The IPL 2024 mini auction saw a significant increase in the number of pacers being bought by the franchises. According to ESPNcricinfo, 36 of the 72 players sold in Dubai were either listed as bowlers or as all-rounders who bowled pace. The total amount spent on the Australian duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins was 19.64% of the total spending by the ten franchises. While the Australian pacers have been the talk of the town, there have been mixed reactions to their high price tags. Some fans and experts believe that the franchises have overpaid for the Pacers, especially considering their recent performances in T20 cricket. In contrast, others believe that the franchises have made a smart move by investing in quality pacers who can make a significant impact in the tournament. The IPL 2024 auction was held on December 19, 2023, at Coca Cola Arena, Dubai. The auction was held outside India for the first time. The ten IPL teams (franchises) had a combined purse of INR 262.95 crore (USD 31.58 million approx.) available to spend at this auction. This was the highest combined purse available for any mini-auction till now. A total of 333 players (capped and uncapped) for 77 available slots (30 overseas) were ready to be filled up at this auction.
