IPL 2024 Auction: Are the Franchises Overpaying for Australian Pacers?

The IPL 2024 mini auction saw a significant increase in the number of pacers being bought by the franchises. According to ESPNcricinfo, 36 of the 72 players sold in Dubai were either listed as bowlers or as all-rounders who bowled pace. The total amount spent on the Australian duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins was 19.64% of the total spending by the ten franchises.

While the Australian pacers have been the talk of the town, there have been mixed reactions to their high price tags. Some fans and experts believe that the franchises have overpaid for the Pacers, especially considering their recent performances in T20 cricket. In contrast, others believe that the franchises have made a smart move by investing in quality pacers who can make a significant impact in the tournament.

One of the Australian cricketers has even gone on record to say that Mitchell Starc is a test player and not suited for T20 cricket. However, it’s important to note that Starc has been a regular on the Australian T20I side and has been performing well in the format. He played in the T20 World Cup 2021 and took 9 wickets in 7 matches. He had an average of 18.11 and an economy rate of 7.24.

It’s also worth noting that the franchises have invested heavily in pacers in the past, and it has paid off for them. For instance, in the IPL 2021 season, Harshal Patel was the highest wicket-taker in the IPL 2021 season with 32 wickets in 15 matches. He was a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore and had an average of 14.34 with an economy of 8.14 . He is also the Indian with the highest bid at the 2024 auction, as Kings bought him for INR 11.75 crore (USD 1.41 million approx.).

According to Cricbuzz, cricket boards from Australia, South Africa, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and West Indies have communicated their players’ full availability for the IPL 2024. This sets the stage for a thrilling season as teams prepare for the much-anticipated tournament which is expected to happen from March 23, 2024, to May 29, 2024.  However, Australian media has criticized Australian players and coaches for leaving in the middle of their commitment to other franchises for IPL. Despite this, star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has vowed to play in the IPL “until he can’t walk anymore”.

In conclusion, while the high price tags of the pacers have raised eyebrows, it’s important to remember that the franchises have invested in quality players who can make a significant impact in the tournament. Only time will tell if the Pacers will live up to their price tags, but one thing is for sure - the IPL 2024 season promises to be an exciting one!
